May 14, 2026 “Two Canal-Path Bike Rides: Germany and France”
Presented by Joan & Jim Stembridge
What could be more fascinating for easy bicycling than the first two Summit canals in Europe—Germany’s Stecknitz (1398) and France’s Briare (1642)? Both canals connect two adjacent watersheds winding over a lowpass through the countryside. Both changed the course of history; both are still in existence, and both are wonderful opportunities to learn about the histories and geographies of Europe. Best of all, bike routes are on old towpaths, often paved and flat, with cute little towns along the way. We did the research on the canals and made all the travel arrangements for our visit in April and May of 2025— flights, train itineraries, overnight stays, bike rentals, and bike path routes. We would be happy to tell you about our experience and show you some scenes from along the way.
